John Patrick Leary reminds us of the work of Robert David Putnam (1941 – ), Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community (2000) Note: The book, was incorrectly stated as being published in 1995. Confusion arises because “Bowling Alone: America’s Declining Social Capital” (1995) was an article published in the Journal of Democracy.

The book expanded on the article: Civic life deteriorated in the last third of the 20th century. People had become less likely to join community organizations, and have become more passive when they do, and they very often do so to gain social capital.

Wikipedia is better than Leary at explaining Putnam, who makes a distinction between two kinds of social capital: bonding capital and bridging capital. Bonding occurs when you are socializing with people who are like you: same age, same race, same religion, and so on. But in order to create peaceful societies in a diverse multi-ethnic country, one needs to have a second kind of social capital: bridging. Bridging is what you do when you make friends with people who are not like you. Those two kinds of social capital strengthen each other. A decline in bonding capital is accompanied by a decline in bridging capital leading to greater ethnic tensions.

Prior to Bowling, Putnam wrote Making Democracy Work: Civic Traditions in Modern Italy (1993). It was a comparative study of regional governments in Italy, with an emphasis on horizontal bonding, which Putnam assures us is responsible for the success of democracies. He depicts northern Italy’s history of community, guilds, clubs and choral societies leading to greater civic involvement and greater economic prosperity. This contrasts with Southern Italy’s agrarian society which is less prosperous economically and democratically because of less social capital.

Putnam defines social capital as “networks and norms of civic engagement”, allows members of a community to trust one another. When people trust one another, trade, money-lending and democracy flourish.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and the world is experiencing global warming. Environmentalist Grete Ernman Thunberg (2003 – ) wants us to be engaged in tackling this problem.

There is a need to stop talking about climate change as saving the planet, but to regard it as an essential step towards improving humanity.

Paul Hawken (1946 – ) in Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming (2017), lists “the 100 most substantive solutions to reverse global warming, based on meticulous research by leading scientists and policymakers around the world”.

Hawken claims that economically viable solutions exist, that if deployed collectively on a global scale over the next thirty years, the Earth would reach drawdown, that point in time when greenhouse gases in the atmosphere peak and begin to decline.

Here are the 10 best solutions (with the total atmospheric reduction in CO2-equivalent emissions in gigatons in parentheses):

  1. Refrigerant Management (89.74)
  2. Wind Turbines, Onshore (84.60)
  3. Reduced Food Waste (70.53)
  4. Plant-Rich Diet (66.11)
  5. Tropical Forests (61.23)
  6. Educating Girls (59.60)
  7. Family Planning (59.60)
  8. Solar Farms (36.90)
  9. Silvopasture (31.19)
  10. Rooftop Solar (24.60)

First on the list, refrigerant management is about replacing hydro-fluorocarbon coolants with alternatives because HFCs have 1,000 to 9,000 times greater capacity to warm the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

Part of the challenge with Hawken, is that he has permanently tainted himself in Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution (1999). Written with co-authors, Amory Lovins and L. Hunter Lovins, the book contends that capitalism is natural, and that nature can be treated within a capitalist framework. It is anthropocentrism at its worst. Solutions to the environmental crisis emerge by bringing nature into an accounting framework. This assumes that forests, seas, wild animals and more have prices, rather than deep ecologic, intrinsic values. They focus on tinkering with the growth/ profit/ consume-oriented capitalist economic model rather than seeing it for what it is, an anti-ecological economic system. They naively believe that capitalism can be reformed to benefit the environment as well as serving corporations and their shareholders.

John Patrick Leary minner oss om Robert David Putnams arbeid (1941 -), Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community (2000) Merk: Boken ble feilaktig oppgitt som publisert i 1995.

Disse to slags sosial kapital styrker hverandre.

Før Bowling skrev Putnam Gjør demokrati: Civic Traditions in Modern Italy (1993).
